A.H. “Dick” Stump, the founder of the hotel and first mayor of Grantsville, purchased the land from the town’s founder, Simon Stump. A.H. was a carpenter and a stone mason who operated the hotel for many years with his wife, Druscilla Ball Stump. Stump once boasted that his hotel was the best in town for both men and horses. Residents of the town have always viewed the hotel as a valuable piece of Calhoun County history.
It remains there today for all to see thanks to the efforts of the Calhoun Historical and Genealogical Society, the donation of the property by the former owner, and descendent of its founder, Dr. Charles Albert Stump of Daytona, Florida, and various grants.
In its day, the Stump Hotel was a booming business that was the temporary home to many travelers who had oil and gas interests in Grantsville and the surrounding area. Grantsville was a busy river town at the time with an economy that relied heavily on timber, oil, natural gas, and the people it took to produce them all.
The history surrounding the hotel is of great interest to the Society and members of the community. Unfortunately, not as much information is available as we would like. If anyone has old photographs, records, receipts, or other items associated with the hotel please contact us. We would appreciate any and all contributions.
